"We Turn Old Into New, Ruined Into Restored, And Liked Into Loved"
So there I was, in Saanich, British Columbia - the largest municipality in Greater Victoria, and home to a diverse array of flora, fauna, and farms.
My wife had dragged me along on this trip, insisting that we needed to "get back to nature" and "embrace sustainability". Apparently, she had read about Saanich's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and protecting natural habitats, and thought it would be the perfect vacation spot for us.
I was skeptical, to say the least.
But as we drove through the lush forests and rolling hillsides of Saanich, I started to see the appeal. Sure, the scenery was breathtaking and the air was fresher than a newly washed puppy, but there was more to Saanich than just pretty vistas.
For starters, there were the heritage sites and landmarks - like the Craigflower Schoolhouse, which my wife insisted we tour, despite my protests that we'd seen enough old buildings already. But I have to admit, it was kind of cool to learn that the schoolhouse was the oldest surviving one in Western Canada. I mean, who doesn't love a good historical factoid?
And then there were the farms. My wife was practically salivating at the thought of all the fresh local produce we could buy at the Saanich Farmers Market. I have never seen her so excited about vegetables before. I mean, I like my greens as much as the next guy, but she was practically doing cartwheels at the sight of a particularly plump carrot.
But the real highlight of our trip was the Victoria Butterfly Gardens. I had never seen so many exotic butterflies in one place before. They were flitting around everywhere, like tiny, delicate fairies. And the other animals there were pretty cool too - like the giant tortoises, who moved at a pace that made me feel like Usain Bolt.
All in all, Saanich was a pleasant surprise. Who knew that a municipality could be so full of surprises? And who knew that my wife was such a nature lover? It just goes to show that you never really know someone until you've seen them in the presence of a giant tortoise.
As for me, I'm just happy to have survived the trip without being pecked to death by a butterfly.
