I've heard a lot of buzz about North Saanich, a rather unusual area on Vancouver Island, so my wife and I decided to check it out for ourselves.
Our first stop was the Victoria International Airport, which apparently is the 9th busiest airport in Canada. My wife was thrilled to see all the planes taking off and landing - she's a bit of an aviation enthusiast, you see.
The Panorama Recreation Centre caught our attention, as it was the training facility for the Canadian Olympic Synchronized Swimming Team in 2016. I couldn't resist making a joke about synchronized swimming being one of the few Olympic events where you can actually drown without penalty.
We then headed over to the Sidney Spit, a sand and gravel spit located in North Saanich. Apparently, it's an important habitat for migratory birds, but it's also a popular destination for boaters and hikers. I was just happy to be able to use the word "spit" in a sentence without getting in trouble.
We couldn't miss the Deep Cove Market, which was voted the "Best General Store in Canada" by Canadian Living Magazine in 2013. I was surprised to learn that there's such a thing as a "general store" anymore, but apparently they still exist in North Saanich.
Of course, we had to check out the North Saanich Marina, which is a popular destination for recreational boaters and is also home to a thriving commercial fishing industry. My wife joked that I should try my hand at fishing, but I reminded her that I once accidentally caught my own shoe last time I tried, so maybe it wasn't my thing.
Finally, we visited the Muse Winery, one of several wineries in North Saanich that produces award-winning wines from locally grown grapes. I'm not much of a wine connoisseur, but I enjoyed trying out the different varieties and pretending to know what I was talking about.
All in all, North Saanich was a charming little town with plenty of interesting sights to see. And hey, I even managed to avoid any awkward conversations with strangers - a successful trip in my book.
